Born Charlton Howard, in Waterloo, Sydney in 2003, the rising rap star grew up in Broken Hill from the age of seven to eleven before moving back to Sydney. In 2015, Laroi attended a boarding school in Adelaide and recorded his first official song “Work it Out” in 2016.
Originally going by the stage name ‘Charlton’, he discovered he was Aboriginal when he was eighteen and a member of the Kamilaroi (or Gamilaraay) people, where his stage name “Laroi” comes from. Laroi is currently based in the US, living in California with his mum and younger brother, Austin.
In 2018, he released his debut EP, '14 With A Dream', and in early 2019, he got a major record deal with Columbia Records. He would then go on to perform with Juice WRLD as a supporting act on his Death Race For Love Australian Tour. After being mentored by the late rapper, who passed away on the 8th of December 2019, Laroi's career has taken off. His first single from his debut mixtape 'F*ck Love' was a collaboration with Juice WRLD and a tribute to his mentor.
Overtaking Lamar is an impressive feat, especially for a seventeen-year-old emerging Aussie artist. Over the course of his career, Lamar has won 160 awards and 399 nominations including thirteen Grammy Awards and six Billboard Music Awards and was even included in Time’s '100 most influential people in the world in 2016'.
