It has been revealed that first responders formed a human chain to protect some of the world's most priceless relics being stored at the Notre Dame cathedral.

The iconic building, located in Paris, went up in flames overnight.

Video footage shows the roof and spire collapsing but the structure of the cathedral has miraculously been preserved.

Notre Dame houses many priceless relics, including a likeness of the 'crown of thorns' worn on the head of Jesus in the lead up to and at the time of his crucifixion.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted "Thank you to the @PompiersParis policemen and the municipal agents who have made this evening a tremendous human chain to save the works of #NotreDame. The Crown of thorns, the tunic of Saint Louis and several other major works are now in a safe place".

Those relics will be transported to a new location for safe keeping.

Earlier Mayor Hidalgo tweeted "I do not have a strong word to express the pain that I feel in the face of #NotreDame flames raved. Tonight, all Parisians and Frenchmen mourno this emblem of our common history. From our motto, we will draw the strength to rise".

On the future of the Notre Dame cathedral, President Emmanuel Macron earlier said they they would fundraise to rebuild. A French billionaire has reportedly pledged 100M euros toward the rebuild.
